LASERLAB VISION - DIGITAL LASER PROTECTIVE GLASSES

Personal protective equipment for work in the area of laser beams in production lines, laser laboratories or the like is mandatory and sensible in most countries in order to prevent burns, DNA damage and, in particular, eye damage. For this purpose, in the current state of the art, laser safety goggles are used, which consist of a robust frame and special filters as sight glasses. The frame is flush with the face and ensures that light can only enter the eye through the filter. The filter is designed for a specific color or wavelength of the laser light. In order to cover the entire light spectrum, for example the various laser devices in a research laboratory, several different laser protective goggles are required. The core of the planned product idea is a new type of laser safety goggles that are not dependent on wavelength and are suitable for all lasers. In order to be able to work with a laser, it is usually necessary to see its light. Classic laser safety goggles do not allow this due to their functional principle through filtering, while the technical implementation of digital laser safety goggles results in additional functions such as visualization of the laser light in the visible and also in the infrared spectral range that is invisible to the eye, data display and control of the laser systems. The “necessary evil” of classic laser safety goggles is replaced by a helpful tool, so that user acceptance and occupational safety are improved. The funding project should enable the development of such a product.

This project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
